CASE STUDY: Genentech

Problem
Genentech is a biotechnology pioneer, delivering innovative medicines to patients with serious or life-threatening health conditions. In this company’s fast-paced environment, it’s essential to manage finances accurately and efficiently. So, when they quickly needed a responsive budgeting tool to support impending planning cycles, they looked to us for an Intranet solution.

Solution
Using rapid development techniques such as FileMaker prototyping, we built a browser-based application that helps cost center managers easily and securely submit, review and revise their budget projections. Once data enters the system, it’s reconciled and formatted for import into Hyperion Essbase Cubes. The tool is designed to be extremely reliable – even during bursts of peak activity, when multiple users post data prior to submission deadlines.

Results
In less than six weeks, we finalized specifications, developed the database, built the web interface, integrated all components and extensively tested end-to-end performance. This rapid development process really paid-off for Genentech, with a zero percent failure rate and very satisfied corporate and cost-center users. In fact, although our tool originally was intended for temporary use while a new, larger system was under development, it’s expected to be re-used during future budgeting cycles.
